How to Get an Electricity Connection (ZESA/ZETDC)

Estimated read time: 3 minutes

Quick Summary

  • Provider: ZESA's distribution arm, ZETDC.
  • Key System: Most homes use a pre-paid meter system.
  • New Connection: Requires an application at a ZETDC office and an inspection of your property's wiring.
  • Buying Tokens: Can be done via mobile money (EcoCash), banking apps, or in supermarkets.
  • Key Document: You will need a Certificate of Compliance from a certified electrician for a new connection.

Getting connected to the national grid and managing your electricity supply is a fundamental part of setting up a home. In Zimbabwe, this is managed by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).

Step 1: Getting a New Connection

This process is for properties that are not yet connected to the grid.

  1. Certified Wiring: First, you must hire a registered electrician to wire your house. The wiring must meet all safety standards.
  2. Certificate of Compliance: Once the wiring is complete, the electrician will issue a Certificate of Compliance (COC). This document certifies that the installation is safe.
  3. Apply at ZETDC: Take the COC, a copy of your ID, and proof of property ownership (e.g., title deed or lease agreement) to your nearest ZETDC depot.
  4. Pay Application Fees: You will need to pay an application and inspection fee.
  5. Site Inspection: ZETDC will send a team to inspect your property and the connection point to the main grid.
  6. Connection: Once approved, ZETDC will schedule the connection and install your meter, which is typically a pre-paid meter.

Step 2: Understanding the Pre-paid Meter System

Most residential properties use pre-paid electricity. This means you pay for electricity upfront and are given a token to load into your meter.

  • Buying Tokens: You can buy electricity tokens through various channels:
    • Mobile Money (EcoCash, OneMoney) by dialling their USSD codes.
    • Your bank's mobile app or USSD service.
    • In person at supermarkets, ZETDC offices, or authorized vendors.
  • Loading the Token: When you buy electricity, you will receive a long multi-digit number. You must punch this number into your meter's keypad and press the enter button to load the units.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Using Uncertified Electricians: For a new connection, using an uncertified electrician means you will not be able to get a valid Certificate of Compliance, and ZETDC will not connect your property.
  • Losing Your Token Number: If you buy a token via mobile money, keep the confirmation message until you have successfully loaded the units. If you lose the number, it can be difficult to retrieve.
  • Ignoring Faults: If you experience a power cut that is not load shedding and your neighbours have power, report it to ZETDC immediately. Do not attempt to fix external electrical faults yourself.

Pro Tip: Stay Powered During Load Shedding

Even with a connection, power cuts are common. A high-capacity power bank is essential for keeping your phone charged for communication and mobile money. This model has enough power to charge a phone multiple times.
