How to Get a Birth Certificate from Abroad

Obtaining a Zimbabwean birth certificate while living in the diaspora can be challenging, as it requires a physical presence at a Registrar General's office in Zimbabwe. However, there are two main pathways to get it done.

Option 1: Applying Through a Zimbabwean Embassy or Consulate

This is the official, but often slower, method.

1. Contact Your Nearest Embassy: Get in touch with the Zimbabwean embassy or consulate in your country of residence to confirm if they facilitate birth certificate applications.
2. Submit Documents: You will typically need to submit certified copies of your National ID or passport, and provide all the necessary details for the application.
3. Pay Fees: You will pay the required application and courier fees to the embassy.
4. Waiting Period: The embassy will then send your application to Zimbabwe. This process can take several months as it relies on diplomatic bag services.

Option 2: Using a Proxy in Zimbabwe (Most Common)

This is the most common and often fastest method. It involves giving a trusted person in Zimbabwe the authority to apply on your behalf.

1. Choose a Proxy: This can be a close family member, a trusted friend, or a reputable registered agent.
2. Prepare an Affidavit: You will need to get an affidavit drafted and signed, giving your proxy permission to apply for the birth certificate on your behalf. This should be signed and stamped by a notary public in your country of residence.
3. Send Documents: You will need to securely courier the following to your proxy:
   • The original, signed affidavit.
   • A certified copy of your National ID or passport.
4. Proxy Applies in Person: Your proxy will then go to the Registrar General's office with their own original ID and the documents you sent them to process the application.
